Saturday Potluck : Late To The Luminite Party

I may be incredibly late to the party, but when you work every evening you miss all the good TV, which is why iPlayer, YouTube and 4od are my friends.

These guys have progressed through the auditions and semi finals of the UK’s Saturday night manufactured monolith, Britain’s Got Talent, and will aim to beat some shadow dancers who exploit everyone’s natural emotions this Saturday in the final. Even if they don’t win, which is likely as everyone seems to be enamoured by Attraction, the aforementioned silhouette people, Luminites appear to have a successful career ahead of them. I’m borderline obsessed with their audition rendition of Millie Jackson/Susan Cadogan’s song ‘Hurts So Good’, to the point where I need to force myself to step away from YouTube. The beautifully harmonised vocals and skilled beat boxing aside, it is the group’s pure charisma instantly that makes me want to buy their album. So if Simon Cowell could snap them up quickly after their 2nd place finish and get on that, that would be great. Dancing silhouettes will entertain the Queen, but Luminites are destined for far greater things.

Saturday Pot Luck: SNAIL

Apparently there’s a clubby type tune called ‘Sail’ by a group called AWOLNATION floating around, the people at The PetCollective were singing it in their office and some bright spark replaced the titular word with that of a small shell-dwelling creature. Hilarity ensues.

I watched the original, and it just didn’t seem as good without the snail.

Saturday Pot Luck: Family Guy and teddy bears collide, hilarity ensues

The latest upcoming film that has peaked my interest is Ted, a Seth MacFarlane production that finds Mark Wahlberg dealing with his bad mouthed teddy bear friend, who came to life many years previously. From what I can tell, Marky Mark has to choose between growing up and starting a new life with Mila Kunis or staying young with his furry stoner friend – not exactly groundbreaking stuff. But hey I might be wrong, and the trailer made me laugh so I’ll be heading to my local cineplex when it comes out.

Saturday Pot Luck: Anti-Twilight hilarity of the week

I am a rather avid user of StumbleUpon, and it’s pretty much guaranteed that a lengthy stumbling session will result in some form of webpage that mercilessly lampoons the polarising mound of  dung that is Twilight. This time it was an article on http://www.io9.com which posed the question: what would the Twilight stories have been like under the pen of another writer, rather than that of the godawful waste of ink that is Stephanie Meyer. Can you tell that I’m not her biggest fan? Call me crazy, but wrapping up Mormon beliefs into every teen girl’s fantasy and then throwing in a demon baby and lots of blood isn’t exactly what I would call literature. And I am completely lost for words on the merit of a teenage boy falling in love with a newborn as a romantic plot device.

Anyway, enough Twiglit bashing, back to the article. My personal favourite is that of Haruki Murakami (devised by a commenter called Benk):

Bella has sex with Edward, who is half a ghost. Jacob is a talking cat. Most of the prose is given over to descriptions of Bella making pasta.

Saturday Pot Luck: Miriam Margolyes should be on TV every day

Today has been a lazy sort of Saturday, and in the absence of any decent weekend television I have had quite a lengthy YouTube session almost entirely made up of clips from The Graham Norton Show. I remember watching him in the V and So days, turning the volume right down and straining to hear both the TV and for any sign that i was about to be caught up way past my bedtime. I have always loved his quick and slightly cruel humour, but it has been through him that I have been introduced to the comic enigma – Miriam Margolyes. She is so refreshingly without a filter, her comic timing and frequent risque topics of conversation have left me utterly helpless with laughter. So I am requiring anyone who reads this post to watch the three videos below, so that more people may know of her brilliance. This way, we might be able to get her back on GNS a few more times, so that we may hear a few more of her salacious anecdotes.

Saturday Pot Luck: Even imagining Colin Firth speaking can make me cry

It’s no secret that I have slight penchant for all things Mr. Firth, but my love for The King’s Speech extends beyond that, for such a British film it’s hugely uplifting. So when Raindance Film Festival’s Twitter feed offered a copy of the script to anyone with an interest, I jumped at the chance. This is a fairly regular occurrence, I have previously been sent a PDF of the Drive screenplay, which was absorbing on paper as it was in celluloid.

On opening my most recent acquisition, of course I instantly located the grand final scene, in which our hero overcomes every obstacle to inspire the country to rise up against evil. All I had to do was read a few lines and I was already tearing up…pathetic.

Saturday Pot Luck: Kevin Costner should deliver everyone’s eulogy

Today was Whitney Houston’s funeral, it was broadcast live to million of people, all of them eager to share in the mourning of an idol. There was quite a stellar lineup of speakers and performers, from the Rev. Al Sharpton to Alicia Keys, but the person who stood out the most for me was Kevin Costner. His speech, though a little random at the beginning, gave us an insight into the Whitney that very few people were privileged enough to see. From her beginnings in a church choir through to an embarrassing mishap during a screen test for her most famous film, The Bodyguard. I was laughing and bawling in equal measure, particularly at the end: check it out below.

Saturday Potluck (Bonus): RIP Whitney

I wasn’t going to write another blogpost tonight but, wow, then Whitney Houston died. I’ve been listening to her music for my entire life, trying and completely failing to sing along with her. She had so many rough patches but it seemed like she had gotten through it all, just like with Amy Winehouse, it seems like you can never escape your demons. The performance above is so beautiful and poignant, I’ve been blubbing along to it on repeat. I can’t even imagine the pain that her family is experiencing, as well as her fans, may she rest in peace.
