Thursday Me Time : Finally! Some Office Experience!

This week I officially started a new job, I’ve been training for the last few weeks while juggling it with my other job at a West End theatre. But this week I dropped down to casual contract there to start a part-time contract in the box office at a different theatre, in which I have worked before. It’s a seasonal venue, so year round contracts are a no go, but after last year I knew that I wanted to return if I hadn’t managed to get a career-making job by the time of their interviews. So I’ve progressed from ripping tickets to selling them, and into what I hope recruiters will see as an admin position.

My main obstacle to a steady job and start to my career has been a lack of solid office experience. Never mind that I know absolutely that I can do it, that my incredibly techy family means that I understand computers, that I’ve been known to solve quite a few problems with photocopiers before, that I know how to co-ordinate and book itineraries. No. Apparently I need to have worked in an office for 3 years to even stand a chance of gaining an entry level position. Fine. But now I’m in the vicious circle of needing experience to get experience. Which is where my new job comes in.

So I’m hoping that the considerably more office-y nature of the role will finally prove to potential employers that I am not a risk, but that I am a competent and passionate worker and worthy of the trust that is placed in a new employee.

Maybe they’re reading this, in which case, please know that I apply for jobs because I know that I can do them and am excited by the prospect of making a difference within a company. So why not let me?

Thursday Me Time : Country Times Are The Best Times

This past weekend I spent some time on a farm with some friends celebrating a birthday. I’ve visited my friend’s family farm in Wiltshire a few times, and it always feels like some sort of exciting school trip, particularly as the people I’m with are generally geologists getting excited about rocks.

While they explain about their work as a hydrologist or their research into the Earth’s inner core, I can tell them about The Oliviers and some good West End shows. Not exactly comparable but for the moment it’s all I have. So this week I learned what the inner core might be made of and how wind farms use nearby water supplies to create energy…at least I think that’s what they were talking about.

But back to the farm, where there is never a dull moment. We got to feed the pigs, collect hens eggs, walk the ferret and nuzzle the horses – basically all of the cool stuff that sounds mundane but actually makes you revert to a 5 year old squealing at the silly animals. The best part happened just before I left, when my friend, her father and I went on a drive to check some of their cows and give some medication to a calf. The excitement came when we happened upon said cows milling around the roadside having broken through the electric fence. We chased the cows back into their field, with the help of Zip the beautiful kelpie dog, and went about fixing the broken fence and tending to the sickly calf.

I have always said that I am a city girl, I found village life stifling to grow up in and moved to London as soon as I could, but last weekend left me yearning for a bit of fresh air and green pastures. Ah well, it’s nice to have a plan – if London doesn’t work out, I’ll just marry a farmer. Sorted.

Thursday Me Time : Ever Wonder How Animals Eat Their Food?

It’s not secret that I spend a good portion of my free time on YouTube, whether it’s catching up with the latest watercooler moments or rewatching my favourite episodes of ‘Supersizers Go…’ (seriously, watch the 80’s one), so it seems appropriate to share my new favourite: How Animals Eat Their Food.
WARNING: Do not try to act this out to your friends in a crowded pub, it may lead to chaos and soggy socks. Trust me.

Thursday Me Time : It’s All About Eldad

Today is not about me, it’s about Eldad Hagar. I don’t know much about him, other than he is some sort of magical dog whisperer who saves the lives of stray dogs around LA.

One of his many videos popped up in my ‘Recommended’ column on YouTube, and three hours later I was still on his channel. The format for every video is as follows:
He has been told about a stray dog somewhere in LA
He goes to said location armed with cheeseburgers and his magic flowery lead
He finds the dog, who generally looks at Eldad like he’s some sort of snack
Five minutes later, Eldad is cuddling and playing with his new best friend

I don’t get it, but I can’t stop watching it.

There have been times when the dog has been less aggressive and more terrified when Eldad turns up, and those are the times when you realise quite how amazing this man is. He doesn’t like to use force, he simply speaks calmly and uses his body language to let the dog know that he is not going to leave. Then within a few minutes it’s like they were always friends.

The most beautiful and tragic element of his videos is the readiness with which the dogs will trust a person whom they’ve just met. It demonstrates their ability to forgive and forget, but shows us what could happen if the person in whom an animal places his trust is not the kind to be armed with cheeseburgers and an innate sense of kindness. The after effects of abuse are clear to see in each video, where most of the dogs have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves. One of the more heartbreaking examples is an Alsatian called Ben, whose owners moved away and left him behind, yet still he waits by the back gate to be let in. Thanks to Eldad and his team, he’s now with a family who deserve him.

It’s probably for the best that I don’t live in LA, as after watching these videos I would by now be referred to as the ‘crazy dog lady’

Thursday Me Time: It’s All About Caine

Caine Monroy is 9 year old boy from East LA, who has built a selection of well-known arcade games out of cardboard boxes. He operates out of his father’s autoparts business and remains optimistic despite never having a single customer, until filmmaker Nirvan Mullick happened upon the store and decided to fulfil the little boy’s dream by raising awareness of his venture and organising a surprise flash mob for him. The joy in Caine’s face when he realises that a large group of people in the street are waiting to play at his arcade is pretty much the definition of heartwarming.

The thought that has gone into his creations, which includes a security system and prizes, would be impressive for an adult, but the fact all this has been achieved by a 9 year old makes it all the more extraordinary.

Thursday Me Time: With special guest, Feist

Lovely music. Lovely style. Just, lovely

Not much to report this week, so I thought I’d share my rediscovery of Feist, I’ve been listening to her for years but recently she has been sidelined by the likes of Rosi Golan and Lissie. Anyway, here’s one of her classics, it always makes me smile and bob along…

Thursday Me Time: I want to Society6 my life

Phrase of the day

This week I’ve become particularly obsessed with Society6 (www.society6.com), a website where thousands of artists have their work reproduced into prints, iPhone covers and t-shirts – to name a few of their products. It’s all reasonably priced and I have gotten lost in the millions of different types of art available, as I imagine where it would all go in my house. Having no money has presented a small problem, so I’ve had to settle for mentally buying everything rather than physically procuring anything for myself. But rest assured, once I have a job I will be placing a rather large order and decking myself out in Society6 head to toe to wall to phone.

The art ranges from pop culture such as Sherlock‘s Irene Adler to abstract prints, humorous cartoons (as seen above) and stunning photography. My particular favourite is the print below, entitled Leo, and I fully intend to get the whole set once I can afford it. What is the point in buying something that even the local department store produces by the bulk a la Andy Warhol style Audrey Hepburn prints, when you could support an independent artist without breaking the bank? Very much up my street.

Love this. So. Much.

Thursday Me Time: Twitter Job Hunt

Apologies for the lateness of this post, I fell asleep while writing it yesterday and had to employ my Superman-like reflexes when I awoke as my laptop was about slide off the bed. Obviously baking cakes really takes it out of me…

This week I was talking to my Dad about trying to find work, and how most of the people that I follow on Twitter post alerts for job vacancies in the media. Ideally I want to get into television production or development, but the old adage of needing experience to get experience is slightly halting my progress. So with that idea, my Dad decided to tweet a message to his 3000+ followers seeing if any of them know of any vacancies, and there have already been a few responses. He included a link to my blog, so I thought that I would aim this post at anyone who fancies a read.

I should mention that my Dad works in the computing industry, so I imagine that most of his many followers work in a similar field of cloud computing or some such software engineering type thing. I freely admit to having no clue about any of this. So if anyone needs an admin assistant or similar, I’m there. I know that I can do the job and make a valid contribution to the company. But if there are vacancies with more of a programming vibe, then unfortunately I cannot be of any help. While my computing skills cover a wide range of office software and social media, when it comes to…whatever software engineering entails, I am without knowledge. As a proactive learner, I am working on this by teaching myself Photoshop and HTML to broaden my tech skills.

The areas in which I most excel are television, film and entertainment – did I mention that I have a photographic memory? – I have become the go to person for information on any of these subjects. I am also a keen traveller, if you read my Travellin’ Tuesdays posts then you will see that I have backpacked around Australia, the South Pacific islands and New Zealand, where I also studied Pacific Lit for a year. So I like to think that I am pretty adaptable and can manage any situation no matter what issues may arise. My 7 years of experience in customer service roles are also a great help.

These skills served me well last year, when I was a Hospitality Intern at The Cambridge Film Festival, where I compiled and managed daily itineraries for all of our delegates. I organised transport, accommodation, dinners, sponsor receptions, and even a UK premiere. I also managed the delegate reception desk and complimentary ticket allocation, which required me to learn a lot of new software fairly quickly. During the festival, I made myself available 24/7, at one point taking a guest back to London at midnight because her flat had been burgled. Whenever anything went wrong – which, in such a fast-paced environment, was quite often – I thought of the best way to solve it and put my plan into action. From co-ordinating multiple arrivals/departures and juggling ticket allocations for sold out screenings, to racing across to town to get vital supplies for the 60+ delegate packs. You give me a challenge and I will get results.

Thursday Me Time: It’s All About Rosi Golan

Today I’ve been going crazy for Rosi Golan’s music. Ever since the Israeli-American songbird’s single “Can’t Go Back”appeared on Perez Hilton’s website (my longtime homepage), admittedly only a matter of hours ago, I have downloaded both of her albums and listened to them on repeat. In the porcess I’ve also discovered a Family Records (www.thefamilyrecords.com), an artist managed company which helps musicians to “cultivate fruitful careers with artistic freedom and longevity”. Yes, it does sound a little airy-fairy, but they sent me a free mixtape along with my purchase of Golan’s album ‘Lead Balloon’, so I’m all for it.

To prove that I’m not developing some sort of ear infection, listen to this and see if you agree with me, that Rosi Golan is destined for great things.
