Fame On A Friday : Further Proof That Will Smith Is A Gift To Interviews

Will Smith never fails to deliver memorable and entertaining interviews, while some people trot out the same anecdotes in a desperate attempt to seem interesting, he seems to have the natural knack for making a person feel that they have experienced something unique. This week was no exception, as he joined Graham Norton with his son, Jaden, and reunited with his ‘Fresh Prince’ cohorts to create a TV moment that is enough to make a pop culture buff’s head explode.

Fame On A Friday : Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan Should Hang Out and Share Their Crazy

The world of celebrity isn’t exactly a nurturing or supportive atmosphere for young, rising stars, so it should seem hardly surprising when people who have grown up under scrutiny turn out to be that crazy person who you avoid on the tube. This week Lindsay Lohan began her court ordered rehab program, complete with temper tantrums because she wasn’t allowed to bring cigarettes/she didn’t like the look of the place/she generally didn’t get her own way and was actually having to face the consequences of her actions for once. Not that it will make a lot of difference to her character. This girl has broken law a number of times and at every court appearance the judge is apparently determined to take a harsh approach, only to reduce any punishment to a minimum – and even then Lohan seems to think it is too much. Yesterday it appeared that she was shopping at an electronics store while her (now fired) lawyer assured the courts that she was safely ensconced in a treatment facility. She then finally checked herself into the Betty Ford clinic (where “she knew people”, which is always a sign of a life well lived) just before a deadline that may have resulted in jail time. We can but hope that some time away from the world and her batshit crazy parents will help her to realise the extent to which that she is destroying her life.

Another starlet in dire need of psychiatric attention is Amanda Bynes, who has shed her sweet Disney persona for that of a genuinely unstable and worrying human being. She is frequently photographed around New York in a variety of strange outfits and situations, stories about her behaviour abound. Today a video was released of her in the gym on a cross trainer looking….interesting. In contrast to Lindsay, Bynes seems to be evoking genuine concern from her family, the public and fellow celebrities alike. Lohan has had her chances, Bynes seems to be oblivious to her vulnerable situation in a way that is reminiscent of Britney Spears’ infamous meltdown. The only question is when there will be a significant event that will lead to Bynes getting the treatment that she so obviously needs, before something infinitely more tragic can occur.

Fame On A Friday : David Attenborough Makes It All Better

On a day when the news is dominated by stories full of anguish and violence, it didn’t feel right to place any kind of importance on celebrity news. The fact that Kim Kardashian is finally divorced should not be news.

So to offer a bit of distraction I offer you the benevolent grandfather of TV, David Attenborough, who can be guaranteed to lift even the lowest of spirits with his soothing voice and interesting stories. See below for a clip from ‘Africa’, his new series, in which he makes friends with a blind baby rhino.

As much as I love to learn about animals and the natural world, I normally I hate to watch nature programming. I cannot stand to see things dying, even if it is nature’s way. I still haven’t recovered from Attenborough’s recent series in the polar regions, ‘Frozen Planet’, those bloody orca always ruined everything with their murderous ways!

Anyway enjoy this lovely clip, completely absent of whales.

Fame On A Friday: Brad Pitt liked it so he put a ring on it

Almost married, always smug

It seems that the tabloids’ favourite couple have finally decided to add some truth to the many millions of marriage stories that have been surrounded them ever since they got together in 2005. Brangelina have been parading their low-key-yet-so-high-profile love for quite some time, and I don’t imagine that it’s about to go away now. I imagine that Jennifer Aniston is dreading the barrage of questions coming her way despite the fact that she is obviously over Pitt (and has been for some time, if only the press would stop bringing it up). While reps for the couple have yet to confirm that the two most beautiful people in the world have decided to make it official, this is the first time that the legitimate press (i.e. not The Sun) has reported on such a rumour, so one can’t help but think that it might be slightly true. However, the twosome didn’t even confirm that they were an item until Jolie was pregnant with The Chosen One Shiloh a full year after they got together.

It does make you wonder what their life (and that of their many children) must be like, to be at centre of a maelstrom of fascination 24/7. Their personas aren’t particularly likeable, not in the same way as Kate Winslet, nor are they easy to dislike, a la Katherine Heigl – they are superstars, plain and simple. Maybe it is that they’ve transcended the more human status of other stars and become godlike beings, permanently enigmatic and a source of wonder.

Who knows? I have no idea why we are all so interested in the engagement of two people in a long term relationship who share six children and are obviously very committed to each other. But none of us are about to rock the boat because we can’t wait to see what Angelina will wear on her special day, and whether her much-discussed leg will make a reappearance.

Fame On A Friday: Lindsay Lohan is a walking anti-drug PSA

The video below should be shown to classes in every school, no one who watches the once sweet little LiLo morph into the haggard mess that she has become could ever believe that drugs were good or cool. I watched it with a mixture of sadness at her lost potential, and disgust at what she has done to herself. It is fitting that this video has come to prominence in the week that Lohan came off of her probation for the first time in 4 years. Maybe in 10 years the video’s maker can produce a sequel, showing how she got her life – and face – back.

Fame On A Friday: Olivia Colman and Gary Oldman are officially recognised as amazing

The best of British

Sunday night’s Jameson Empire Awards brought a lot of satisfaction, for myself and many others, as exceptional work was finally recognised by the people who matter most to filmmakers (I hope) – the viewers. Having previously been ignored by pretty much every major awards body, people such as Olivia Colman and Gary Oldman were celebrated as heroes of their craft. I am still at a loss to understand why Oldman has never one an Oscar, and was only nominated for the first time this year. I mean, the man’s an acting genius! He is a veritable chameleon of the silver screen, and most definitely a national treasure.

I was utterly captivated by Colman’s performance in Tyrannosaur, it is without doubt the greatest film I’ve ever seen that I never want to see again. I’m so glad that she has finally been given the recognition that she deserves and I cannot wait to see her future dramatic performances. She has made me shriek with laughter in Green Wing and Peep Show, and left me weeping in despair as she tearfully asks to be held in Tyrannosaur. Is there nothing that this woman can’t achieve?

Fame On A Friday: Forget Kony, Arrest Jason Russell

So it’s been established by now that I’m having a few difficulties settling into the whole ‘write a blog every day’ thing. Apologies, but for the past week I’ve actually had something of a life – which is exciting in itself. I’ve been across what felt like every bloody county in England, from London to Cambridge to Nuneaton to Manchester to Salisbury to Bath to Southampton. Yup, it’s quite a lot to cover in a few days, so you can appreciate that writing a blog wasn’t exactly high on my priorities. But anyway, back to normal…

Earnest yet slightly creepy

This week, in a brilliant twist of irony, the figurehead of the ‘Arrest Joseph Kony’ movement has been arrested for public intoxication and masturbation. The plastic good looks of Jason Russell couldn’t even save him from a crime so low that not even Lindsay Lohan has managed to commit it. He was later hospitalised, so his altered state was no doubt due to more than just a few too many cocktails.

Of course, Invisible Children (his slightly shady foundation) have released a statement painting him as a victim of exhaustion and malnutrition, so dedicated to his cause that he ran himself into the ground. Bollocks. The man has created a worldwide phenomenon with a video viewed by 76 million people (so far), he was definitely basking in his newfound glory. He seemed like a pompous twat in the video, I can only imagine that his ego has inflated further. I do feel incredibly sorry for his family though. Maybe someone should try to explain Russell’s indiscretions to his incredibly adorable son through the use of two photos, one of a doting father and the other showing the mess that his own has become.

Fame On A Friday: Movie Trailer Bonanza!

This week has been a tad quite in the world of fame, but I have been watching a lot of trailers for highly anticipated films coming up in the next few years. Quite fittingly, the three below mirror my life quite nicely – Men in Black was a childhood favourite, American Pie was influential to my generation during my teenage years, and Despicable Me has become a recent favourite among my friends and I, oft quoted and giggled at. Needless to say I’m quite excited about my future cinema prospects.

Enjoy.
